Good marketers know that strong branding equals strong sales. And you can bet your bottom dollar that they will use these tactics in tough times to get you to buy. Don’t be deceived.
Don’t believe the hype that the government will bail you out. Whatever stimulus the government ends up providing, it will be less than $5,000 for you—if that much. Rescue yourself and those around you. You will need to rely on your industriousness, your ingenuity, and frugalness to survive.
That being said, saving can be a chore especially if you are out of practice. I rely on automatic deductions to save--otherwise I would be dead in the water. Here are some entertaining money games should you need monetary discipline.
1) Give me 5. Each time you get a $5 bill save it rather than spend it. I worked with someone who saved all of the $5 bills she got. Each year she saved around $5000. Last year she bought a chinchilla fur coat, which is obviously not the point. But if you save all your Lincoln
2) Ignore the Raise. This year you might be getting a measly raise. It might piss you off. But ignore the raise. Put that extra 1% or 2% merit increase in your savings account and live on last year's salary.
3) Keep the Coin. Stash all of your change in a jar and take it to the bank every 3 months. I got this tip from my Mom. I put away about $200 every few months by aggregating my change--change that would otherwise be sloshing around in my handbags.
4) Cut it Out. Make Lent last longer and give something up for the year--like dessert. Set aside the money that you would ordinarily put toward buying the dessert and watch the dollars pile up and the poundage drop off.
5) Lower Your Limit. This tip is courtesy of my hubby. He says lower the credit limits on your credit cards to curb your appetite on spending (in his case curbing his wife's appetite).
